Alassë Limpessë

An Elvish Drinking Song,
by Edin Najetovic

Download [mp3]

Program Notes

The tune is in simple triple meter because I based it on what was my perception of medieval music at the time; also the quiet choir-intended part of the song is something I made up on the spot, so a bit strange perhaps.

Note also that my pronunciation on this recording is pretty bad and you can clearly hear I am Dutch on this one. Most notably, I botch up the stress in _alASsë_ and change it into _Alasë_. I intend to throw the tune out eventually and replace it with a better one.

I'm looking for a lutist, because guitar is not really the thing for such songs. You can find me on the conlang mailing list.

Lyrics

Líran alta alassëo,
I-yulma quanta tornassëo.
Á tulë! Tornenyar,
Á lilta! Þeldenyar,
An alassë, alassë limpessë.

Rómenya cálenna,
Hlónelva númenna.
Á silë! Elenyar,
Á wilë! Aiwenyar,
Cennienyel lómessë, limpessë.

English

We are singing of great joy,
The filled cup of brotherhood.
Come! My brothers,
Dance! My sisters,
For there's joy, joy in the wine.

Unto [the coming of] the eastern light,
our sounds drift to the west.
Shine! My stars,
Fly! My birds,
When I see you in the night, in the wine.
